New brand and reenergised streaming service, Foxtel Now, heralds tranformative new era for Foxtel

Today, at a special celebration event, Foxtel launched a new look and new strategy designed to pronounce that Foxtel is for everyone. Regardless of genre, budget or personal circumstance, Foxtel has something for every Australian taste.

The event opened with a surprise visit from Lily Sullivan, Madeleine Madden and Ruby Rees, the stars of Foxtel’s upcoming drama Picnic at Hanging Rock, which has just finished shooting, followed by the unveiling of a dramatically different new brand and logo symbolising a major turning point in Foxtel’s delivery of content across multiple touch points.

Foxtel partnered with design business Maud on the creation of its new visual identity, designed to better reflect Foxtel’s more open and inclusive service offering.

As a major part of its new strategy, Foxtel also announced the arrival of a revamped internet delivered TV service, Foxtel Now. Foxtel Now is a new evolution of the Foxtel Play service and features low-priced, flexible bundles coupled with the addition of HD streaming on select devices^, a new user interface and the ability to watch on the big screen via Google Chromecast.

Subscribers to Foxtel Now will be able to sign up and enjoy the highly anticipated seventh season of Game of Thrones, in HD, for only $15 per month.

Foxtel also reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to bring the best in local and international programing. Foxtel invests more than $100m each year on original Australian programs, outside news and sport, and its Foxtel Original productions have garnered numerous industry awards in recent years.

Foxtel’s exclusive deal as the Home of HBO guarantees the ongoing broadcast of some of the most highly acclaimed programming ever, including, Westworld, VEEP, Big Little Lies, Girls and Silicon Valley, in addition to Game of Thrones.

Recognising the popularity of on demand viewing, Foxtel has also been continually broadening its Foxtel On Demand library and now hosts a selection of more than 16,000 titles of on demand TV and movie programming with over 1,200 of the hottest movies available, including, in 2017, 98 of the top 100 Box Office movies of 2016. Foxtel’s 20th Century Fox recent-release titles arrive 12 months before Netflix and Stan, including blockbuster movies Eddie The Eagle, X-Men: Apocalypse, Independence Day: Resurgence and Ice Age: Collision Course.

Foxtel’s Picnic at Hanging Rock sold to Amazon U.S. in landmark deal for Australian drama

Foxtel’s upcoming event drama series, Picnic at Hanging Rock is the latest series to be added to the Amazon Prime Video US line-up following a deal with FremantleMedia International. The epic new series, starring Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, In Darkness) as English headmistress Mrs Hester Appleyard, is a re-imagining of Joan Lindsay’s timeless Australian novel.

Picnic at Hanging Rock will have its world premiere on Foxtel in Australia in 2018. It is a FremantleMedia Australia production made with key production investment from Screen Australia. The series was shot in Victoria, Australia, with the significant assistance of the Victorian Government through Film Victoria.

“The sale of Picnic At Hanging Rock marks the largest U.S. commercial deal ever for an Australian television series," said Brian Walsh, Foxtel’s Executive Director of Television.

Picnic At Hanging Rock is Foxtel’s third major Australian drama series to be sold to the U.S market. All five seasons of prison drama Wentworth are seen in North America on Netflix, The Kettering Incident is available on Amazon Prime U.S. and long running rural drama A Place To Call Home is screened on Acorn and American Public Television.

A major sale of TV Week Logie Award-winning political thriller Secret City is expected to be concluded soon.

Picnic at Hanging Rock will plunge viewers into the mysterious disappearances of three schoolgirls and one teacher on Valentine’s Day 1900, taking the audience on a new journey into the revered Australian novel. The complex, interwoven narrative follows the subsequent investigation and the event’s far-reaching impact on the students, families and staff of Appleyard College, and on the nearby township.

The Appleyard College student roles are filled with an exciting contingent of rising stars, including Lily Sullivan (Camp, Jungle) as Miranda Reid, Madeleine Madden (Tomorrow When The War Began, High Life) as Marion Quade, Samara Weaving (Monster Trucks, The Babysitter) as Irma Leopold, Ruby Rees (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) as Edith Horton and introducing Inez Curro as Sara Waybourne.

Foxtel updates channel line up

Foxtel Arts and Foxtel Smooth to share broadcast signal; Lifestyle YOU to cease as key programming moves to Lifestyle and Arena

Foxtel has today announced that, from October, there will be scheduling changes to its linear channel line up with Foxtel Arts and Foxtel Smooth channels sharing a broadcast signal and key Lifestyle YOU programming making the move to Lifestyle and Arena.

Effective October 11, both Foxtel Arts and Smooth will share the same broadcast signal, while still occupying two channel numbers (133 and 806). The two channels will be day-parted, with Smooth programming throughout the day and overnight from Midnight to 6.00pm and Foxtel Arts content scheduled from 6.00pm to 12 Midnight, daily.

At the same time, Lifestyle YOU will cease broadcasting with key programming moving to The Lifestyle Channel, Arena and On Demand as Foxtel looks to streamline and improve its world-class service.

“We have taken this decision because it makes a lot of sense both in financial terms and audience optimisation,” said Brian Walsh, Foxtel’s Executive Director of Television. "Foxtel Smooth’s peak audiences are in daytime, whilst for Arts, audiences tune in during the evening, so this is really about combining the best of both worlds for our customers. Yes this is consolidation, however, as our television and video world continues to evolve, it is imperative we review every aspect of the business.

“Foxtel is in the business of curating and acquiring the best content across multi genres and creating strong super channels which serve a wide variety of tastes. The new Smooth / Arts combo and the streamlining of Lifestyle You are examples of that," he said.

The formats for each signal remain the same. Foxtel Smooth, which is operated under brand license from Smooth FM, will continue to broadcast a rich playlist of contemporary music based on the highly successful Smooth FM playlist.

Foxtel Arts will continue to showcase the best in performing arts from Australia and around the world.

Foxtel Smooth / Foxtel Arts will continue to be broadcast at two channel locations on the Foxtel platform, at both Channel 133 and Channel 806.

This change also means that, for the first time, Foxtel Arts will be available to all Foxtel customers, irrespective of their subscription package.

Arena and The Lifestyle Channel are available from the Entertainment pack on channel 105 and 106 as well as on +2 channels on 151 and 152.


Foxtel Welcomes Conviction and Sentencing of Subscription TV Pirate

Foxtel has welcomed the sentencing of a Sydney man for his role in the selling of unauthorised access to Foxtel services.

Haidar Majid Salam Al Baghdadi, 33 years old, was convicted of criminal offences relating to charges of operating an illegal network that allowed more than 8000 people across Australia to access Foxtel subscription television broadcasts for free. A Sydney court has sentenced Al Baghdadi to serve an 18 month suspended jail term for carrying out the offenses.

The conviction and sentencing are the result of on-going joint antipiracy investigations involving the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Foxtel investigators, and Irdeto, the world leader in digital platform security. The three organisations uncovered an organised criminal network responsible for committing a wide-range of intellectual property theft of Foxtel services.

Foxtel’s CEO, Peter Tonagh, said, “Foxtel welcomes today’s court ruling and hopes it sends a strong signal that this type of activity is illegal. Foxtel takes intellectual property theft very seriously as it severely undermines the creative industry including every business and individual that works so hard to deliver us the movies, sport, drama and entertainment we love.

“Foxtel conducts ongoing investigations into the theft of Foxtel programming and we are proud to work so closely with the AFP and our partners at Irdeto to ensure the full force of the law is applied to protect our content.”

Rory O’Connor, Senior Vice President of Cybersecurity Services at Irdeto, said, “This conviction is another step forward in the global fight against online piracy. The seriousness of these crimes should not be underestimated and this result is further proof that piracy will not be tolerated. Partnerships like this play a crucial role in not only detecting these pirate networks, but ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

Foxtel and Tim Cahill announce new school Academy

Today at Ascot Vale Primary School, Foxtel and Socceroos superstar Tim Cahill announced they will be pioneering a new Academy program into Australian schools.

In 2013, Foxtel and Tim Cahill joined forces to create the Foxtel Tim Cahill Academy - a free football program to inspire the next generation of Australian footballers through exclusive coaching clinics. So far, Foxtel and Tim have provided the experience to over 4,000 boys and girls across Australia.
This year, the Academy is expanding, so even more children can have a shot at their football dream.
Kicking off with Victoria, our Foxtel head coaches will be working with local schools to provide young Australians with the Foxtel Tim Cahill Academy experience.

Foxtel, Fox Sports Australia To Combine Into New Premium Sports and Entertainment Company

Telstra and News Corp today announced their intention to combine Foxtel and Fox Sports Australia into a new company, one that is well positioned to deliver premium sports as well as homegrown, original and international entertainment in a rapidly evolving and competitive marketplace.

The move to combine the companies will align ownership and management for success at a time when more Australians are consuming premium content across more technologies and platforms than ever before.

Subject to the conclusion of definitive agreements, regulatory review and satisfaction of certain other conditions, the following key changes will be implemented as part of the new arrangement:

News Corp will have 65 per cent shareholding in the new company and Telstra will have 35 per cent
News Corp will appoint the Chairman, majority of the new company’s board and senior executives and Telstra will appoint the remaining directors

The new company will be positioned to meet the needs of Australian viewers and create greater choice than ever before by:

Investing in Australian written, produced and directed programming
Delivering a wider range of new and innovative products and packages across devices and platforms
Continuing to invest in premium content and technology to meet growing consumer demand
Expanding distribution channels for the sale of Foxtel and Fox Sports products, and developing greater operating efficiencies across the combined businesses, including distribution
The proposed arrangements will better position the new company for an initial public offering in the future, with News Corp having a majority stake.

If the transaction between Telstra and News Corp is concluded on the proposed terms, News Corp expects to consolidate the new company into its financial statements.

Telstra CEO Andy Penn said the transaction would provide the new company with a strong platform to flexibly respond to significant changes in the media, communications and content markets.

“Our strategically significant investment in the new company will be an important part of Telstra’s media strategy,” Mr Penn said.

“Under this arrangement Telstra will continue to support the company with our broadcast reseller arrangements which is a major strategic component for us.

“More people are watching more media on more devices for more hours every day of the week, so the demand for media and for content is only going to grow. With a strong premium content proposition and scale subscriber base, the new company will be well positioned to deliver a compelling customer experience.”

News Corp Chief Executive Robert Thomson said, “The proposed restructuring of Foxtel and Fox Sports will unlock value for News Corp shareholders and provide a clearer vision into the depth and strength of our Australian assets. The new structure will simplify management control and ensure that the company is best placed to leverage the skills of its talented Australian employees and programme makers.”

“There is no doubt that the world of content is becoming more complicated and competitive, and it is important that Australia has a strong local platform for its great sports and for homegrown creativity, as well as a showcase for international programmes,” Mr Thomson said.

At this stage certain key commercial terms of the proposed transaction have been agreed on a non-binding basis. Telstra and News Corp have signed a binding process agreement under which they will prepare long form agreements to give legal effect to the commercial principles.

Telstra and News Corp will work to finalise the transaction, including obtaining regulatory approval, to be completed in the first half of 2018.


Foxtel welcomes continued court action on piracy site blocking


Additional steps to halt online piracy will see Yes Movies, Vumoo, Los Movies, Cartoon HD, Putlocker and more blocked by Australia’s largest ISPs

Foxtel today welcomed the Federal Court’s latest actions to further address online piracy, with orders in a proceeding instituted by Foxtel to block an additional 127 domain names that allow access to 15 pirate streaming sites and 2 torrent sites, and orders in a separate proceeding instituted by the movie industry to block over 40 pirate sites.

In the proceeding instituted by Foxtel, Australian ISPs TPG/iiNet, Optus, Telstra and Vocus, will be required block the domain names associated with pirate streaming sites: Yes Movies, Vumoo, Los Movies, Cartoon HD, Putlocker, Watch Series 1, Watch Series 2, Project - Free TV, ProjectFreeTV, Watch Episodes, Watch Episode Series, Watch TV Series, The Dare TV,,, as well as Torrent sites: 1337x and Torlock.

The news follows last year’s blocking of some of the largest online piracy sites and increases the number of domain names blocked by the Federal Court, as a result of Foxtel’s site blocking applications alone, to more than 250. In total, 65 major piracy sites have now been ordered to be blocked by the Federal Court.

The Government’s passage of the site blocking legislation, and the Court’s continued willingness to impose site blocking orders, illustrates the gravity of the threat and the concern we should all have about protecting the hard work of the actors, writers, directors and production teams involved in creating the programming we all love.

“Foxtel believes in the importance of educating people that accessing pirated content is not a victimless crime and we will continue to do our part in shedding light on the seriousness of intellectual property theft, while simultaneously helping to ensure our content is available quickly, easily and at a price that suits their budgets.”

Today’s court action coincides with the launch of Australia’s biggest ever anti-piracy campaign, dubbed ‘The Price of Piracy’. The campaign is led by Creative Content Australia, and emphasises the need to protect intellectual property rights while underscoring the threat of content theft on the creative industries. ‘The Price of Piracy’ also illustrates the dangers of malware, ransomware and identity theft associated with copyright infringing websites.

Game of Thrones season 7 finale makes ratings history for Foxtel

The final episode of season 7 of Game of Thrones brought massive audience numbers for Foxtel marking it as the most watched overnight programme in Australian subscription television history.

‘The Dragon and the Wolf’, Game of Thrones season 7, episode 7, achieved a record breaking audience of 887,000 viewers with more viewers to add once the consolidated data becomes available.

The final episode’s overnight figures topped the season’s premiere episode 1 of Game of Thrones, which, at 820,000, was itself a record breaker before being outdone by last night’s broadcast.

The Game of Thrones season 7 audience has been incredibly engaged throughout the season with the show pulling in a cumulative average audience of 1.22 million viewers per episode.

Foxtel and Dendy will be launching a new route to market for Australian and international film content by combining theatrical and premium on demand channels of distribution. This new model will create a more sustainable distribution strategy for niche feature and documentary films.

This innovative route to market provides a national footprint achieved through a theatrical season at Dendy Cinemas and partnering exhibitors, followed by a near simultaneous premium on demand season on Dendy Direct and Foxtel Store that launches one week after the theatrical release.

Following its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival, AUSTRALIA DAY, a Hoodlum production for Foxtel, will be released under this innovative new model in cinemas on September 21 and then available one week later ‘Express from Cinema’ in Foxtel Store and on Dendy Direct on September 27.
