Foxtel acquires 8-part HBO drama series My Brilliant Friend

Showcase

Foxtel today announced the acquisition of HBO’s new drama My Brilliant Friend, an eight-part series based on Elena Ferrante’s internationally bestselling novel of the same name.

Set to premiere on Foxtel in 2019, My Brilliant Friend is based on the first book in Ferrante’s four-part series of novels, which trace the friendship of two girls, Elena and Lila, in postwar Naples.

With production on My Brilliant Friend currently underway in Caserta, Italy, casting for the series took place over a period of eight months, with almost 9,000 children and 500 adults from all over Campania auditioning.

Newcomers Elisa Del Genio and Ludovica Nasti were chosen to portray the two lead roles of Elena and Lila as young children. As production on the series progresses, these young actors will give way to two teenage actors, Margherita Mazzucco (Elena) and Gaia Girace (Lila). In total, My Brilliant Friend is expected to include a cast of more than 150 actors and 5,000 extras.

The series tells the story of Elena Greco, a now-elderly woman who discovers the most important friend in her life, Raffaella ‘Lila’ Cerullo, has disappeared without a trace. A writer, immersed in a house full of books, Greco turns on her computer and starts writing the story of their tempestuous friendship, starting from the point when Elena met Lila in their first year of school in 1950.

Set in a dangerous and fascinating Naples, their story goes on to cover more than 60 years of their lives, as she tries to describe the mystery of Lila, Elena’s brilliant friend and – in a way – her best friend and worst enemy.

My Brilliant Friend is an HBO, RAI FICTION and TIMVISION series, produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside and by Domenico Procacci for Fandango, in co-production with Umedia Production.

The eight-part series will stream on Foxtel and screen on showcase in 2019.

Mr Inbetween
New Australian drama series directed by Nash Edgerton and starring creator Scott Ryan
Streaming on Foxtel and screening on showcase
Monday, October 1 at 8.30pm AEST

Showcase

Mr Inbetween , an Australian six part drama series created by and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton will premiere on Foxtel’s showcase, Monday October 1 at 8.30pm.

The series is inspired by the critically acclaimed feature film The Magician , written, directed and starring Scott Ryan who introduced audiences to the very funny and very dark world of hitman “Ray Shoesmith”. Originally shot over ten days at a cost of AUD $3,000, Ryan met filmmaker Nash Edgerton who took on the project as editor and producer along with Michele Bennett . Receiving further funding, the film was released in 2005 and went on to be nominated for a Film Critics Circle of Australia Award and an Inside Film (IF) Award.

Ryan reprises the role as charismatic, yet volatile hit-man “Ray Shoesmith”, and also serves as the series writer. Driven by dark humour and off-beat conversation, the series follows Ray as he navigates his chilling business, while also maintaining friendships, parental responsibilities and a fledgling romance. Tough roles to juggle in the modern age and even harder when you’re a criminal for hire.

The Mr Inbetween cast, each who characterises “Ray’s” intense world, includes Justin Rosniak (War Machine, Animal Kingdom), Brooke Satchwell (Jack Irish, Wonderland, Packed To The Rafters) , Nicholas Cassim (Wish You Were Here, Around The Block) , Chika Yasumura , Damon Herriman (No Activity, Justified, Secret City), and features appearances from David Michôd (writer/director The Rover, Animal Kingdom, War Machine), Matt Nable (Bikie Wars, Jasper Jones), Firass Dirani (House Husbands, Underbelly) and Edmund Lembke-Hogan ( Ladies in Black, Wanted).

The idea of taking “Ray Shoesmith” into a television series context took 14 years for Scott Ryan to realise.

“To have Mr Inbetween finally made was incredible and a relief,” said Scott Ryan. “In the series we wanted the audience to question whether they like him or not and that was a challenge in the writing, and would be a challenge for me as an actor when it came to capturing that in my performance,” he adds. “Mr Inbetween has all kinds of elements, it’s not just funny, it’s not just violent; it’s like a three course meal, you’re getting a bit of everything within his morally complex, dangerous and funny world.”

Prior to directing Mr Inbetween , Edgerton directed Gringo, starring Academy Award® winning actress Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried and Thandie Newton. Edgerton also served as Executive Producer on the soon to be released Boy Erased , directed by Joel Edgerton and starring Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Joel Edgerton.

“I couldn’t be more excited to share with the world, Scott Ryan’s wonderfully dangerous character, “Ray Shoesmith” and see him come to life once again,” Edgerton said. “Scott is a very talented writer and actor with a great natural ability, and he’s able to tread that line of being really charming and really scary at the same time. That’s what I loved so much about the character when I first saw The Magician and why I was interested in exploring the character further.”

Mr Inbetween is an extraordinary achievement for Scott Ryan, who took it from an indie film with a cult following to a half-hour drama that he stars in,” said Eric Schrier, President of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. “Scott is one of those rare creators who can bring his own character to life on screen, and he is perfectly paired with Nash Edgerton, who brilliantly directed all six episodes. This project is a great inaugural step with Foxtel as we build Showcase as the destination for FX’s Original Series in Australia.”

Mr Inbetween is produced by Michele Bennett ( Chopper, The Magician ) and executive produced by Nash Edgerton, Jason Burrows and Scott Ryan and is a collaboration between the Blue-Tongue Films collective (The Gift, Wish You Were Here, The Square) and Jungle Entertainment (No Activity, Here Come the Habibs,The Moodys) , with funding support from Screen Australia and Create NSW and has been developed with the support of FX Networks in the US.

Every episode of Mr Inbetween will be available to stream through Foxtel On Demand on internet-connected iQ set-top-boxes and on streaming service Foxtel Now.

The End

FOXTEL, SKY UK AND SEE-SAW FILMS ANNOUNCE PRODUCTION OF THE END
FRANCES O’CONNOR AND HARRIET WALTER TO STAR

Fox%20Showcase download

Foxtel, Sky UK and See-Saw Films today announced production of a major new drama series, The End, starring internationally acclaimed actresses Frances O’Connor ( The Missing, Mr Selfridge ) and Dame Harriet Walter ( The Crown, Succession) . The series will be filmed on location with assistance from the Queensland Government through Screen Queensland.

Created and written by Samantha Strauss, The End is a 10-part series produced by See-Saw Films, the Oscar® winning and Emmy® nominated producers of the films Lion and The King’s Speech and the drama series Top of the Lake .

Set-up director is Jessica M Thompson, whose feature directing debut, The Light of the Moon, had its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival in the US in 2017, where it won the audience award for best narrative feature. Jonathan Brough ( Rosehaven ) will also direct.

The End is about three generations of a family with separate but intersecting obsessions – trying to figure out how to die with dignity, live with none and make it count.

English born, Australian actress, Frances O’Connor plays Dr Kate Brennan , a senior registrar specialising in Palliative Care medicine. Euthanasia is a hot-button topic in Kate’s field of work and Kate is passionate in her opposition. On the other side of the world, Kate’s mother Edie Henley (Walter) is just as passionate about her right to die. Kate has little choice but to ship Edie out from England and deposit her in a nearby retirement village - Edie’s worst nightmare. While Kate struggles with her own problems, her children are trying to work out who they are, and who they want to be. The End is about Kate and Edie’s stumbling, fractious journey as they find their way back to a relationship. It’s a story about parents and children, ethics and emotion, and mostly how it’s never too late to start again.

The cast will also feature Noni Hazlehurst ( A Place to Call Home ), Robyn Nevin ( Top of the Lake ), Luke Arnold ( Black Sails ), John Waters ( Offspring ), Alex Dimitriades ( Secret City ) Roy Billing (Rake) and young Australian actors Morgana Davies ( Devil’s Playground ) and Ingrid Torelli ( Matilda).

Foxtel’s Head of Drama Penny Win said: “Commissioning The End was a wonderful opportunity for Foxtel and we’re excited to be collaborating with our colleagues at Sky on this, our joint first co-commission. The End will present a universal story that affects us all, with Sam Strauss’s beautiful storytelling being brought to life by an exceptionally talented cast and crew.”

“It’s thrilling to be returning home to Australia to be part of such an original series and to be playing a character as complex, interesting and conflicted as Dr Kate Brennan,” Frances O’Connor said.

“This is a really original project and I can’t wait to get stuck in to the character of Edie who is not quite like any other part I’ve played. Exciting,” Harriet Walter said.

Liz Lewin, Executive Producer for Sky, said: “Thought-provoking, darkly comic and full of heart, the show dives into provocative topics with unflinching honesty. The End’s wonderfully complex characters will make you laugh, cry and question how you want to live… and die.”

“It’s rare to see the complexities of life for middle aged and older women depicted on screen but Sam Strauss has created just that with a group of characters with trials and tribulations that will resonate for all ages - we couldn’t wish for a more wonderful cast to bring these characters and Sam’s startlingly original scripts to life,” said Executive Producer, See-Saw’s Rachel Gardner.

Samantha Strauss said: “So often we shy away from death and try to sanitise it, pretend it’s never going to happen. This series aims to do the opposite. As our characters figure out how to die, they’re really grappling with how they’ve lived and what they’re going to do with the time they have left. No one’s perfect in this family but they love each other for their flaws and hopefully audiences will too.”

Executive Producers for the series are Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Rachel Gardner, Samantha Strauss, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman. Louise Smith and Carol Hughes are producers, with Patrick Walters as Associate Producer. Executive Producers for Foxtel are Penny Win and Carly Heaton. Executive Producers for Sky are Liz Lewin and Anne Mensah.

Production begins in October. The series will air on Fox Showcase on Foxtel in Australia, on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW TV in the UK and Ireland during 2019. Endeavor are selling the series internationally.
