Cobra Kai

Ace Degenerate:

Series opener.

Cobra Kai is the TV sequel series to The Karate Kid with clips from the first movie especially the tournament between Daniel and Johnny being incorporated here.

The tournament was in 1984 and we then jump to the present in 2018 and what has life been like for Johnny as he still is reeling from his defeat by Daniel in the said tournament.

Ralph Macchio appears briefly as Daniel in this the first episode as he unexpected had a reunion with Johnny and what a surprise who Daniel’s daughter turned out to be.

Ace Degenerate is a very good series opener and it was very good in making us sympathise with Johnny and made Daniel look like the villain even though it was the other way around in The Karate Kid.

Hands down. This was one of my most favourite shows to watch this year. Cannot wait until series 2 hits the web. Just hoping it doesn’t go the way of The Karate Kid Part III.

Strike First:

Season 1, Episode 2.

After the series started off mostly from Johnny’s perspective this the second episode shows that life has been good to Daniel and certainly not the villain that Johnny’s perspective made him out to be.

Nicely handled episode including Daniel dealing with the reality being the father of a teenage daughter and confronting Johnny in his new dojo.

Season 1, Episode 3.

The episode title is Spanish for skeleton and it harks back to Daniel wearing a skeleton costume in the first Karate Kid film and here Miguel wears one at the school.

What particularly got my attention is from the said dance when I saw a male student in costume as the Eleventh Doctor and picking up a girl.

Seeing this Miguel says to his friends that they just lost one (a girl) to Doctor Who!

Given the Eleventh Doctor here and notwithstanding having seen the Karate Kid movies beforehand, what triggered me in starting in Cobra Kai was rewatching Selfie 1.6 Never Block Cookies.

In this Selfie episode, a Karate Kid reference was made by Eliza Dooley and she was played by Eleventh Doctor companion my wife Karen Gillan.

Whilst on the subject of triggering mechanism and having seen the first two episodes what triggered me in seeing this the third episode of season 1 was seeing a rerun of School Reunion, the third episode of David Tennant’s first season as the Doctor.

School Reunion & Esqueleto both has a school as a setting but more so in the Doctor Who episode than in the Cobra Kai episode.

Cobra Kai Never Dies:

Season 1, Episode 4.

Interesting that this episode begins with a kid stealing a laptop before it is revealed that he is Johnny’s son.

Oh dear on what was done to Daniel’s face on a billboard by Johnny.

After failing to get through with his son it sure provided an inspiration for Johnny to beg Carmen to let son Miguel back into karate lessons.

Season 1, Episode 5.

This episode is dedicated to the memory of Pat Morita as Daniel visits Mr Miyagi’s grave.

Morita died in 2005 while Mr Miyagi got to live six years longer when he died in 2011.

The gravestone shows that he 86 when he died and Morita would have been 86 this year 2018 when this episode along with other season 1 episode got released.

Quite sneaky with Daniel with his manoeuvre to shut down Cobra Kai.

Also sneaky is Robby getting a job at Daniel’s workplace.

Mercy Part II:
Season 2 opener.
Quite awkward Johnny bumping into Daniel and Robby at the store.
This comes as Johnny and Kreese patch things up and I wonder how this will play out.

Back in Black:
Season 2, Episode 2.
Interesting to see the way Daniel and his wife selling cars.
What a reunion that Daniel had with Kreese at the end.

Fire and Ice:
Season 2, Episode 3.
Daniel’s offer of free karate did not go well with a couple not appreciating what they have to do to get these lessons.
Poor Daniel as he got upstaged by Cobra Kai at that event.
Sad on Johnny recounting that he wasn’t there when Robby was born as his own mother had just died.

The Moment of Truth:
Season 2, Episode 4.
Should not be surprised that Kreese made things up about himself.
Quite intense when Samantha accused Tory of stealing her (Samantha) mother’s wallet leading to Tory to push Samantha down a food table.
An unexpected recruit of Demetri to Miyagi-do, the consequence of Kreese throwing him of Cobra Kai at the start of this episode.

All In:
Season 2, Episode 5.
What a fight that took place at the mall with Sam and Robby fighting against Hawk and gang as they defend Demetri.
That vandalism at Miyagi-do sure brought things to a head with Daniel getting defectors from Cobra Kai in the process.

Take a Right:
Season 2, Episode 6.
Johnny meets up with old Cobra Kai friends and sad the one of them Tommy dies as he had terminal illness.

Season 2, Episode 7.
What a gesture Miguel made to Robby by giving him the medal.
I guess it was inevitable that Johnny severs ties with Kreese and expels him from Cobra Kai.

Glory of Love:
Antepenultimate episode of season 2.
Quite a love theme with this episode.
Johnny seemed to have lucked out with Carmen before finding what her new boyfriend is really like.
Surprising when one of Johnny’s date was someone he met before and what a blow-up that was.
What an altercation that took place at the skate ring.
Quite good effort with Daniel making up to Amanda.

Penultimate episode of season 2.
Johnny and Carmen were having their first date in a restaurant when Daniel and Amanda coincidentally came by and was forced to sit together as there were no other tables available.
Quite fascinating how they managed to get by this civilly.
Funny the waitress who did not write anything down only managed to get thing wrong in all this.
Sad about Robby’s mum going into rehab.
A party was held for Cobra Kai and Miyagi-do and funny that a fight got averted between Demetri and Hawk when the cops came.
Surprising ending when Johnny sees Robby with a drunk Samantha.

Was surprised that during the party that Demetri asked Hawk whether he had checked out the new Doctor Who trailer.

Hawk says he does not watch “nerd s**t.”

Demetri then says, “You know, uh, Moffat isn’t the showrunner anymore.”

Hawk: “Wait, really? Since when? Is there a new Doctor? What’s he like.”

Demetri: “Oh. She’s badass”

Hawk: ““She”. No way.”

This episode along with the entire second season of Cobra Kai was released by YouTube Premium on April 24 2019, just months after the end of Jodie Whittaker’s first season as the Doctor.

No Mercy:
Season 2 finale:
Daniel sure wasn’t happy where he found Sam at the near start of this episode.
There is a drawing of a dinosaur and with this episode named No Mercy, there is a Doctor Who episode called Dinosaurs On a Spaceship which came immediately before A Town Called Mercy.
Oh my I sure wasn’t expecting a very big fight on the first day of school. My days at high school was nothing like that.
The big fight was enthralling to watch and flabbergasted that no teacher did anything to stop it. In fact there was one who said that he was not paid enough to stop something like this and then bolted.
The fight ultimately ended when Robby pushed Miguel causing him to fall on a great level and saw Miguel as well as Sam in the hospital.
Just as No Mercy being the final of Cobra Kai’s ten episode season to see Miguel having a great fall, Jodie Whittaker’s own second ten-episode season as the Doctor had its finale The Timeless Children coincidentally sees a fall with The Timeless Child and Brendan.
Johnny gets blamed by Carmen for Miguel in the hospital and gets a further setback when Kreese stole back the dojo from him.

I was taken aback that the season and this episode ends with Johnny, unnoticed by him, has gotten a facebook friend request from Ali.

There seems to be a very good indication that Elisabeth Shue will reprise Ali in season 3 but it is not a definite.

No Mercy ended a season that started with Mercy Part II marking opposites at bookends.
