SBS-"we are in the shit"

THE loss of Top Gear to the Nine Network will have a material effect upon the ability of the public broadcaster to commission Australian productions, according to Matt Campbell, SBS's director of television and online content.

"The loss of Top Gear is certainly a blow to us, and it is a blow to the producers sitting in the room, because Top Gear for the last four years has been funding many of your programs," Mr Campbell told delegates at the 2010 Australian International Documentary Conference in Adelaide last week.

Campbell also said advertising revenue from the program was "quite a few millions -- and without it, frankly, we are in the shit"."How dire is it?" he asked of SBS's budgeting. "It's dire. We have no money for online; we have no money for SBS TWO."

they may end up being the first network to have 1 HD channel in their mux and nothing else :p

Or they'll end up leasing space to other channels like community tv, NITV, A-PAC, etc.

A-Pac wouldn't be that bad. We don't need 3 SBS channels.

Pretty sure SBS wasn't set up to bring more shows about fast cars to Australia. If they threw all their eggs into the Top Gear basket then too bad for them.

Not sure what SBS is supposed to be now. Half the shows could be on Lifestyle Channel.

The best thing to do would be to merge ABC & SBS and cut out all the bureaucratic waste

ABC1 - Mainstream stuff
ABC2 - Leftover slops
ABC3 - Kiddies
ABC4 - Oz News
ABC5 - World News
ABC6 - Wog stuff
ABC7 - 24/7 Inspector Rex
ABCHD1
ABCHD2

and so on

Same with radio

SBS was not setup originally for Top Gear, South Park and alike

Yeah I would put money on ABC doing an SBS channel a lot better than SBS seem to be able to.

There is no real reason now for SBS anyway. They do not adequately fulfil their charter of being a broadcaster to showcase international cultures. When they do Australian Drama......that is not the intent of the SBS Charter.
