NRL Clubs Slam Nine

CEO's from clubs including Penrith, Canberra and Cronulla have launched a scathing attack on the NRL broadcast arrangements that continually deny their clubs free-to-air coverage on Channel Nine.

The Knights, Sharks and Warriors were left furious on Tuesday when the NRL announced they would not have a single game shown on free-to-air television for at least the first seven rounds of the competition.

Calls for the NRL must follow the AFL's example of giving clubs a guaranteed fair share of free-to-air game-time with a fixed season schedule
.

Conclusion they don't know much about the AFL and making money
Yes the AFL have a fixed 21 round Season schedule but clubs are not guaranteed their fair share of FTA games. But what does help a little in getting more exposure for the struggling and unloved AFL Teams compared to those in the NRL is 2 networks covering the games and more games on FTA

Nine pick what is going to rate. Sides like the Dragons, Eels and the Broncos, Titans are consistently top-raters for NSW and QLD markets respectively. Also Nine like to make sure QLD coverage is LIVE during the early weeks of the season when NSW has daylight saving.

Roosters used to get picked for FNF quite often but they haven't been a top side for a while now. The Warriors are similar, and the Sharks have a small supporter base and after 40+ years their trophy shelf still lays bare. Nine pay for the rights and they're entitled to pick the matchups that they think is going to rate best. And we do want to see the best matchups available to everyone don't we? That's the whole idea.
What is the use of showing matches that are going to make the ratings suffer? It would only hurt the game and its value.

Yes the current arrangements are good for Nine but they are terrible for supporters and clubs who might want to plan a trip away to see their team play. I've booked flights to go see my team play in the AFL, an NRL supporter can't do that until 6 weeks out.

The question would be if Nine didn't get a choice in what they showed, ie the NRL made their schedule however they wanted like the AFL and Nine got worse games how much less would they pay for the rights. And on the flip side would Fox Sports pay more as they are getting better games. The case could be made that it actually wouldn't cost the NRL anything.

Just because a team rates well, it doesnt mean they necessarily play well. This issue goes further then Television though, those teams who dont get FTA coverage often play the majority of their season on Saturday nights, ceos have complained before this is a disadvantage for those in the finals

I can understand during the first few rounds but once the ladder becomes established the top four or five teams would get top preference for Friday night and Sunday afternoon coverage y/n?

Channel 9 choose matches that will rate highest. You can't complain about them do that anybody in their situation would do the same thing. The problem is with the NRL allowing them to put it in as part of their broadcast agreement.

It is the same with the footy here in SA I think 15/16 out of the 22 rounds are shown on Foxtel-crows games. It is on free TV but only in SA not nationally as well. And our nrl coverage is deplorable here in SA.It starts at 12.00am on Saturday morning on a Friday night game. They should let SA fans see it on the main event channel.
