Multiple FOX sources have confirmed to US trade journals that the network's 24 has been axed.

The series, currently in its 8th season, is due to end with a 2 hour finale in late May.

Speculation was rife in recent years that with costs skyrocketing, along with falling ratings, were forcing a re-think of FOX's strategy.

Variety reports that the series may move to the big-screen but this is yet to be confirmed.

Movie idea would be good. There is almost 2 hours of storyline in the current series.
