Queensland Cabinet minutes from 1974 released today reveal a government deeply worried about the introduction of colour television the following year.

The 30-year-old documents show the Cabinet was so concerned about the proliferation of charlatans selling contrivances which promised instant colour TV from black and white sets, that it approved a brochure outlining the facts to be sent to Brisbane and regional residences.

The 1974 Cabinet agenda also included religious education in schools, the establishment of Queensland's first pedestrian mall in Ipswich, and the go-ahead for a Government precinct in George Street in Brisbane.

Current Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten says while the conservative excess of the Joh [Bjelke-Petersen] days are gone, Queenslanders remain conservative in their thinking.

"Queenslanders have shown over a period of time that they don't like a rapid change, that they still want a government that progressively reforms rather than goes in a mad dash and turns things over," he said.

"And I think that has remained unchanged for 30 years and likely to stay that same way."

The only thing in my apartment that might remotely identify me as an EX-Novocastrian is the framed Hunter Mariners jersey on the wall.

I doubt anyone in Newcastle even remembers them, let alone possess a jersey they are prepared to display.

It sits right next to the Brisbane Lions 2003 Fitzroy Heritage jersey :)

Hunter Mariners - ROFL!!!!

I remember them well - they wanted 2NM/POWERFM Muswellbrook to be their broadcast partner - my station manager and I (sales executive) at the time laughed them into the ground! :)
