After last week's boost for HD-DVD in the form of three Hollywood studios signing up for it, today Blu-Ray has received a much-needed shot in the arm with the news that Disney has opted for the Sony-backed next-generation standard and will start releasing content once hardware starts rolling out in Japan and the US.

While it's a non-exclusive arrangement by Disney, meaning that it's free to switch formats if it so chooses, it does mean that Blu-Ray can now count on content from Disney itself, Buena Vista, Touchstone, Dimension, Miramax and other studios under the Disney umbrella, making plenty of reasons for consumers to choose Blu-Ray players next year.

It's still all to play for, though, in what's shaping up to be a proper re-run of the VHS/Betamax wars. Stay tuned for the next exciting installment!
