ITS makers call it the "politically incorrect" hamburger. Its detractors condemn it as the "burger of death".
Officially, the "Double Monster Thickburger" is America's unhealthiest hand-held meal, with a stomach-swelling 1420 calories and 107 grams of mostly saturated fat.

That's about two-thirds the recommended daily calorie intake for men, and almost twice as much saturated fat.

The burger - a generously buttered bun encasing four strips of bacon, two greasy meat patties, three melted slices of cheese and a dollop of thick mayonnaise - is the US midwest's answer to calorie-counting, Atkins diets and films like Super Size Me.

The 12cm high creation is so big it comes with its own tray, is held together with a skewer and dwarfs its decoration of tomato, lettuce and onion.

To work off just one such burger, diners would have to walk for 22km, attend three aerobics classes or simply watch television for 18 hours.

Most customers look like they've chosen the last option.

The burger is squashing the opposition in several ways. One Monster Thickburger is the equivalent of two Big Macs and a chocolate thickshake, and it has contributed to a big jump in sales for burger retailer Hardees.

Hardees has made a concession to weight-conscious customers: the Monster Thickburger's smaller cousin, the low-carb Thickburger, is wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun.
