-Ratings Breakdown:
The good news for ABC was a midweek victory, with a first-place finish in the overnights (and most likely total viewers and adults 18-49 when the fast national results are released). But the third season-premiere of the still dominant Lost came down considerably from it’s year-ago opener. Lost averaged a first-place 12.3/18 in the overnights, which comparatively was down by 18 percent from its year two debut (Overnights: 15.0/21 on Sept. 21, 2005). Yes, folks, this could be concerning, particularly given that ABC is foolishly putting new Taye Diggs drama Day Break into the Lost time period for three months beginning in mid-November.
Lost led into the debut of drama The Nine, which is likely to share dominance with CBS’ CSI: NY in the 10 p.m. hour once the fast nationals are released. As it stands, The Nine debuted with a second-place 9.1/15 in the overnights (but is expected to dominate among adults 18-49 courtesy of lead-in Lost). While that was an improvement of 17 percent in the overnights from year-ago occupant Invasion (Overnights: #3, 7.8/12 on Oct. 5, 2005), there are two other things to keep in mind about The Nine.
1) Retention out of Lost was 74 percent in the overnights (with similar results expected among total viewers and adults 18-49). That may not sound great, but comparatively it was an improvement over former occupant Invasion.
2) Erosion in the second half hour was 11 percent in the overnights (9.6/15 to 8.5/14), with similar results expected among total viewers and adults 18-49.
Earlier in the evening, the shocking departure of Vivica A. Fox on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars (www.pifeedback.com) resulted in a typical first-place 12.3/19 in the overnights.
Although CBS’ Jericho was down, it was far from out with a still respectable second-place 6.7/10 in the overnights (three week track for Jericho: 7.7/12 – 7.3/12 – 6.7/10). Comparably, former occupants Still Standing and Yes, Dear averaged a 4.7/ 8 in the overnights on the year-ago evening. Expect a full-season renewal for Jericho any day now.
Jericho led into sleeper Criminal Minds, with a solid second-place finish in the overnights (10.4/15). Opposite the debut of ABC’s The Nine, CSI: NY capped off the evening for CBS with a 10.4/17 at 10 p.m. As a reminder, fast national results were not available at press time.
Although Fox remained on the Wednesday map courtesy of Bones (Overnights: #4, 5.9/ 9) and a repeat of House (Overnights: #3, 6.5/10), NBC fell into the distant No. 4 spot. A repeat of Friday Night Lights opened with a last-place 3.5/ 5 in the overnights at 8 p.m. That led into The Biggest Loser at a 4.6/ 7 (#4), followed by week three of the failed Kidnapped at a distant last-place 3.7/ 6 at 10 p.m. Growth for The Biggest Loser out of the Friday Night Lights repeat of 31 percent in the overnights keeps it off the loser’s list. For more on Kidnapped, meanwhile, see TV Tidbits below.
The news was mixed over at the CW, with the always reliable America’s Next Top Model at a solid 4.7/ 7 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (with particular strength expected, of course, among key female demos.). Unfortunately, lead-out One Tree Hill took at hit, dipping to a mere 2.4/ 4 in the overnights. Retention for One Tree Hill out of Top Model was just 51 percent in the overnights.
