CHINA has pledged to step up its crackdown against copyright violations on the internet, acknowledging the problem of illegal online sales of entertainment and software was widespread.

China's National Copyright Administration (NCA) said 75 websites had already been closed down following a four-month campaign that ended in December into illegal online sales of movies, music, games and software.

"What we've investigated may be a very small portion of the problem," NCA deputy commissioner Yan Xiaohong said.

Mr Yan said Chinese authorities would also work more closely with international companies and organisations, as many of the serious cases involved theft of overseas creations.

In the recently ended campaign, the NCA investigated and dealt with 172 cases, of which 28 involved serious violations, Mr Yan said.

Of the 28, 14 were reported by international right holders and organisations.

Intellectual property violations are one of the biggest concerns for China's major trading partners, particularly the United States, who claim Chinese authorities do very little to stamp out rampant piracy.
